The 10 Best Places to See Fall Foliage Near Cortlandt Manor
There is something magical about fall in the Hudson Valley.
Maybe it is the first cool morning when you finally reach for a sweatshirt. Maybe it is the smell of wood fires drifting through the neighborhood. Or maybe it is watching the hills slowly transform from shades of green into brilliant reds, oranges, and golds.
People travel from all over to experience autumn here, but if you know where to go, you do not have to fight the biggest crowds to enjoy some incredible views.
As someone who lives and owns a business in Cortlandt Manor, these are the places I recommend for anyone who wants to enjoy fall foliage in northern Westchester and the Hudson Highlands. Whether you are looking for a challenging hike, an easy walk, or simply a scenic drive, these are some of the best places to experience fall color near Cortlandt Manor.
1. Anthony's Nose
If someone asked me to choose just one place that captures the beauty of the Hudson Valley in the fall, this would probably be it.
The hike to Anthony's Nose is relatively short, but do not mistake short for easy. The trail climbs steadily before opening up to one of the most breathtaking overlooks in the area.
From the top, you can look down on the Bear Mountain Bridge stretching across the Hudson River, with layers of colorful mountains disappearing into the distance. It is the kind of view that makes you stop talking for a minute.
Go early on weekend mornings. Parking fills quickly once peak foliage arrives.
2. Bear Mountain State Park
Bear Mountain is famous for a reason.
Whether you drive toward the summit when seasonal roads are open, hike one of the accessible trails, or stroll around Hessian Lake, you will be surrounded by some of the most vibrant fall color in New York.
If you are visiting in mid to late October, this should absolutely be on your itinerary. Check current park alerts before you go, since trail access and road conditions can change.
3. Blue Mountain Reservation
Blue Mountain Reservation is one of the best local options in northern Westchester.
The reservation has miles of wooded trails winding through forests that become beautiful each October.
Because there are multiple trail options, you can choose anything from a leisurely nature walk to a longer workout.
It is also often less crowded than some of the more famous Hudson Valley hikes, making it one of my personal favorites.
4. Croton Gorge Park
Not everyone wants to climb a mountain.
Croton Gorge Park offers incredible scenery with almost no hiking required.
The New Croton Dam becomes even more impressive when surrounded by colorful trees, and the wide open lawn makes it perfect for families, photographers, or anyone looking for a peaceful afternoon.
Bring a blanket and a coffee. You may stay longer than you planned.
5. Hudson Highlands Gateway Park
This is one many visitors have never heard of.
Hidden right here in Cortlandt, Hudson Highlands Gateway Park offers quiet trails, wooded hillsides, wetlands, streams, and beautiful places to walk without the crowds you may find at larger parks.
The park includes hundreds of acres and several miles of trails, making it a lovely option when your idea of a perfect fall morning is hearing leaves crunch beneath your feet.
6. Camp Smith Scenic Overlook
Sometimes you do not want a hike.
Sometimes you just want to pull over, take in an incredible view, snap a few photos, and continue your drive.
The scenic overlook along Route 6 near Camp Smith offers panoramic views of the Hudson Highlands that become especially beautiful during peak foliage.
It is one of those places locals sometimes forget about because we drive past it so often. Visitors are usually amazed.
7. Bear Mountain Bridge
Whether you are driving across it or viewing it from Anthony's Nose, the Bear Mountain Bridge is one of the defining landmarks of the Hudson Valley.
During October, the surrounding mountains can glow with color.
If you are already exploring the area, do not rush across the bridge. Slow down and appreciate just how beautiful this stretch of the Hudson River really is.
8. Downtown Peekskill Waterfront
Not every foliage experience has to involve hiking boots.
Grab a coffee from Peekskill Coffee House and head toward the waterfront.
Watching colorful trees reflect off the Hudson while trains roll by and boats drift downriver is one of the simplest pleasures of fall around here.
Spend some time wandering downtown afterward. The local shops, restaurants, public art, and creative energy make it an easy place to lose an afternoon.
9. Van Cortlandt Manor
Even before the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze begins each evening, the setting around Van Cortlandt Manor is beautiful in the fall.
Historic buildings, mature trees, and the surrounding landscape make it feel like you have stepped into another century.
If you are already visiting Blaze, arrive with enough time to enjoy the setting before sunset. For 2026, Blaze runs select evenings from September 18 through November 8.
10. Lila Within
This might not seem like an obvious addition to a foliage list.
But after spending a cool autumn morning outside, there is something incredibly comforting about stepping into a warm yoga studio.
A beautiful fall day near Cortlandt Manor might start with a hike, continue with hot yoga or Pilates, and end with coffee or dinner with friends.
The combination of crisp air outside and a heated yoga class inside is one of those experiences people do not realize they need until they try it.
Whether you have spent the morning hiking Anthony's Nose or exploring Blue Mountain Reservation, ending your day with movement, warmth, and a little recovery feels pretty perfect.
When Is Peak Fall Color Near Cortlandt Manor?
Every year is a little different, but generally:
Late September: Small hints of color begin appearing.
Early October: You start seeing more yellows and oranges.
Mid to late October: Peak foliage often arrives across much of northern Westchester and the Hudson Highlands.
