The Ultimate Fall Weekend Guide to Cortlandt Manor & Peekskill
If you are looking for the perfect fall day in the Hudson Valley, you are in the right place.
From September through November, visitors come to the Hudson Valley for apple picking, colorful leaves, pumpkin patches, scenic hikes, and the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze. But if you only visit the big attractions, you may miss some of the area's best local experiences.
As someone who lives and owns a business here, this is how I would spend a fall Saturday in Cortlandt Manor and Peekskill.
Whether you are planning a date, a girls' day, a family outing, or a relaxing weekend getaway from New York City, here is your local guide.
8:00 AM: Coffee at Peekskill Coffee House
Start your morning at Peekskill Coffee House in downtown Peekskill.
It is one of those places locals return to again and again. Grab a latte, a fresh pastry, a crepe, or a breakfast sandwich and spend a few minutes enjoying the slower pace before the day begins.
If the weather cooperates, take your coffee for a walk through downtown Peekskill. The brick sidewalks, murals, independent shops, and historic architecture make it one of the most charming river towns in the Hudson Valley.
9:30 AM: Take in the Fall Colors
One of the best parts of autumn in northern Westchester is that incredible hiking and scenic overlooks are only minutes away.
Here are three easy ways to build foliage into your morning.
Blue Mountain Reservation
If you are looking for a moderate hike without driving far, Blue Mountain Reservation offers miles of wooded trails that become especially beautiful in October. It is a local favorite because you can choose anything from a short walk to a longer morning adventure.
Bear Mountain State Park
If you have never experienced Bear Mountain in peak foliage season, it is worth the drive.
The mountain overlooks, Hudson River views, Hessian Lake, and surrounding roads can be spectacular, especially during mid to late October. Check current New York State Parks alerts before you go, especially if you are planning a specific trail or hoping to visit Perkins Memorial Tower.
Go early. Parking fills quickly on fall weekends.
Croton Gorge Park
If hiking is not your thing, Croton Gorge Park offers one of the prettiest fall walks in the area.
The massive New Croton Dam surrounded by colorful trees is one of the most photographed locations in Westchester County. The park is also a great option for families, picnics, and anyone who wants beautiful views without a steep climb.
Noon: Lunch in Peekskill
By lunchtime, head back into Peekskill.
Downtown has everything from casual cafes to waterfront restaurants, and it is easy to spend an hour wandering before grabbing lunch.
One of the things I love most about Peekskill is that it still feels like a real community. You will find local businesses, creative spaces, independent restaurants, and the kind of places that make a fall day feel unhurried.
2:00 PM: Warm Up at Lila Within
After a crisp morning outside, there is nothing better than walking into a warm yoga studio.
This is Lila Within's first fall in Cortlandt Manor, and we are especially excited to welcome people who are ready to build a routine before the end-of-year rush begins.
Your muscles may feel tighter as the temperatures drop, and a hot yoga or Pilates class can feel incredible after hiking, sightseeing, apple picking, or even sitting in the car.
Whether you are brand new to yoga or have practiced for years, our classes are designed to meet you where you are.
Visitors are always welcome. So are beginners. So are people who feel nervous walking into a studio for the first time.
It is the perfect reset before heading into the rest of your afternoon.
4:00 PM: Explore the Hudson River
One thing visitors often do not realize is how many beautiful waterfront parks are tucked throughout this area.
Spend some time walking along the Hudson River, watching boats pass, or simply enjoying the changing leaves reflecting on the water.
Fall sunsets along the Hudson are hard to beat.
6:00 PM: The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze
If you are visiting between mid-September and early November, end your day at the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze at Historic Van Cortlandt Manor in nearby Croton-on-Hudson.
With more than 7,000 illuminated jack o'lanterns arranged into incredible displays, it is one of the Hudson Valley's signature fall experiences. Timed tickets are required and often sell out well in advance, especially on weekends. For 2026, Blaze is scheduled for select evenings from September 18 through November 8.
Even if you have seen pictures online, they do not quite capture how impressive it is in person.
Before Heading Home
If you are in the mood for something sweet, check Pinky's Ice Cream in Cortlandt Manor before heading home. Their small-batch flavors make a fun final stop, even when the weather has cooled down.
If ice cream is not the move, grab a warm drink instead and enjoy one last stroll before heading home.
Make a Weekend of It
If you are staying overnight, you could easily turn this into an entire Hudson Valley weekend.
Sunday ideas include:
Visiting Cold Spring
Walking the Croton Dam
Exploring Beacon
Shopping local boutiques
Taking another yoga or Pilates class at Lila Within
Enjoying brunch before heading home

Spend Fall Like a Local
One of my favorite things about living here is that every weekend can feel a little different.
Some mornings start with coffee and a hike. Others begin with yoga before heading to the river. Sometimes it is simply watching the leaves change while catching up with friends over lunch downtown.
However you choose to spend your visit, I hope you slow down enough to enjoy what makes this little corner of the Hudson Valley so special.
And if your weekend happens to include a class at Lila Within, we would love to welcome you.
